Reported Arsenal and Tottenham target Steve Finnan will not be available to return to the Premiership this January according to Espanyol coach Mane.

The former Reds right-back has only managed four appearances in an injury ravaged season so far, but is seen as an important member of the Spanish side.

Mane told the Spanish press: “No doubt Finnan will be an important player for our defence.”

Former Liverpool coach Paco Herrera, now sporting director for Espanyol, added that: “Finnan is staying at Espanyol because we consider him an important player that will help us in the second half to the season.”

Former Red number seven Kevin Keegan has quit the role of Newcastle United manager after just eight months in charge.

The former European player of the year felt he had “no choice” but to leave his position at the club he holds so dear after days of meetings with club executives and owner Mike Ashley.

The lack of control over transfer policy appears to be the main reason for the departure and many Newcastle fans are said to be livid at seeing a cult hero depart the club again. Several are calling for Ashley and his employee, Dennis Wise, to leave the club immediately.

Michael Hooper (10/2/64) will always be remembered by Reds fans as a reliable understudy to Bruce Grobbelaar through the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Born in Bristol, the big keeper played in the same school team as the likes of Gary Smart, Ian Holloway and Gary Penrice at the Lockleaze Comprehensive.

He joined Liverpool from Wrexham in 1985 and only made 51 appearances before leaving for Newcastle United in 1993, where he found himself as a backup yet again. This time it was Czech keeper Pavel Srnicek that blocked his path to first-team football. He went on loan to Sunderland briefly in 1995 before his contract ended in 1996. He then retired after failing to find a club in the Summer of 1996.

He is now a doorman for a bar in the City of Durham.

Blackburn Rovers are set to offer Robbie Fowler a short-term six month contract to prove himself again at this level.

Paul Ince has been eager to get a deal signed with the Anfield legend after having the striker for five weeks of preseason after rejected a new one year deal at previous club Cardiff City. The Bluebirds had hoped to offer him longer terms, but a series of injuries prevented them from doing so. Fowler has only managed to make 16 starts in the past two seasons and will be hoping to put his injury woes behind him.

Ince said: “Robbie hasn’t played a competitive game since last October, so he has been out for a long time.

“But he has done well in training and some of the stuff he has done on the training pitch has been mind blowing.

“There is no doubt that he has still got it. He is a Premier League goalscorer and always will be. The only issue is getting his sharpness back.”
