Roy Hodgson’s weakened Liverpool side ensured their passage into the group stages of this season’s Europa League after a tough encounter against Trabzonspor in a rain soaked game.

Teofilo Gutierrez slotted in from a Gustavo Colman shot after just three minutes to quickly bring the home side level after a narrow 1-0 defeat at Anfield last Thursday.

David N’Gog put a headed chance wide from within the six yard box, but Giray Kacar slid a Glen Johnson cross into his own net after eighty-four minutes.

Dirk Kuyt brushed aside all the speculation about his future by slotting in the rebound from a Dani Pacheco shot in the eighty-eighth minute after good work from fellow Dutchman Ryan Babel.

The Turkish crowd were booing and hissing every Liverpool touch throughout, but were silenced by the two late strikes that condemned their side to defeat after such a promising start.

Roy Hodgson and Sammy Lee commanded the Reds from their waterlogged dugout throughout and were visibly delighted when the two late goals sealed the win.

The Reds were second best in a difficult first-half on a heavy pitch that seemed to suit their hosts, but the second half was a vast improvement that saw Joe Cole and David N’Gog make more of an impact alongside the constant forward runs of Johnson.

The introductions of Pacheco and Babel contributed to each goal with the pair trading passes in the build-up to Kuyt’s tap-in. The Spanish youngster looked lively and hungry and will have relish his tenth substitute appearance in the famous red shirt.

The draw for the group stage is tomorrow and Hodgson will be hoping for a kind outcome for his team.

Great result. Nice to see Pacheco get a run out. He is a real talent.
