Roy Hodgson is ready to move for West Ham striker Carlton Cole after seeing his side woefully beaten by big-spending Manchester City on Monday.

According to The Mirror, Hodgson believes he needs a targetman to play alongside Fernando Torres rather than the slender and inexperienced David N’Gog – who formed a fruitless pairing on Monday evening.

While Liverpool are concerned about the striker’s injury record and are only prepared to pay £6 million upfront, with the other £6 million depending on appearances, West Ham are said to want as much as £15m for the Englishman.

Liverpool are likely to face strong competition from Stoke City for Cole’s signature, but West Ham’s valuation has seen Sunderland drop out of the running, while Kenwyne Jones’ arrival at Stoke could eventually see them pass the signing up.

Cole is not Hodgson’s only target for a tall frontman however, with PSV Eindhoven revealing that they have already been contacted by Liverpool about the availability of their Swedish frontman Ola Toivonen. And reports in Germany suggest the Reds are keen to sign Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez on loan.
