Roy Hodgson has set Barcelona a time limit to get their bid up to the asking price for Javier Mascherano – Sunday this weekend.

The new Liverpool manager has grown tired of fending off bids of around £12m-£15m for the Argentina captain and wants the situation resolved by the end of the weekend.

“I wouldn’t want to say he has played his last game for Liverpool,” Hodgson is quoted.

“The negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs and if he had played here it might have prejudiced the transfer and I didn’t wish to do that to the player.”

“I am seriously hoping that in the next couple of days it will be sorted out one way or another – although I have no idea which way that will be.”

“Tomorrow night was out of the question but Sunday is very much a question because I think by then I should know one way or another whether he is going to play for Liverpool this season or Barcelona.”

Hodgson is taking the right stance. Wenger tried to ignore all the speculation over Fabregas and that turned into a disaster. Barca should either put up or shut up. If they get the right money then they should let him go.

Didn’t Rafa say last summer that Mascherano was worth £50m? I can’t believe we are considering selling for less than £25m. We should have let him go last summer. He’s a great player but when he plays with Lucas the team as an attacking unit is very limited.

Out of the three big players rumoured to have been moving in the summer Mascherano is the one I’d have let go before Gerrard or Torres.
