Roy Hodgson is hopeful that Liverpool can complete a deal for Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Jones before the close of the transfer window.

Jones, who has also been linked with Arsenal this week, was the subject of a rejected offer said to be in the region of £1.5m.

The Australian keeper was left out of the Carling Cup tie with Chesterfield by Boro manager Gordon Strachan and could be set to complete his move to Anfield sooner rather than later.

He said: “I haven’t spoken to (managing director) Christian Purslow because he is in London with the rest of the board but I’m hoping that transfer will take place and the sooner the better.”
