Steven Gerrard has stated his desire to see his “friends” at Manchester United lift the European Cup next week.

“I hope it’s a very good game from a neutral point of view,” he said.

“I’ll be watching the game and hope there is a lot of entertainment. It’s obviously a difficult question. But I’ve got a lot of good friends who play for Manchester United so I hope they win, although obviously I’m sitting on the fence.” he finished.

It doesn’t sound like he’s “sitting on the fence”, however, not when he’s hoping that they win and given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs the statement appears ill-advised and hasty.

Rafael Benitez will also be unhappy with his captain’s comments after another week of fierce rivalry with Alex Ferguson.

The fans are sure to be livid with his comments also, but his status as a Reds legend will probably see the comments swept under the carpet.

I don’t think Gerrard’s Words must be taken literally. Deep down inside he’s probably thinking Never mind if Utd do win this year because we’re gonna maul them and snatch that cup and the league from them next season no matter what no matter what it takes to do it, so let them enjoy it while they still can cause next season it will be over for the Mancs

Why should Gerrard’s sense of fair play be condemned? He also said he wanted Arsenal to win it when they played Barcelona and has said plenty of good things about Chelsea. He prefers to see English teams winning in Europe wherever they’re from–and lots will agree with him.

He should not say it, even if he thinks it.
