Manchester United are not the best team in the country, according to Rafael Benitez.

Alex Ferguson’s men today equalled Liverpool’s long-standing haul of eighteen league titles, but Benitez has refused to concede that Alex Ferguson’s men are the top side in the land.

“If United have more points, it only means they have more points, that’s all, nothing else,” Benitez said.

“Sometimes they can be the best at the beginning, in the middle or maybe with consistency, but it just means they have more points.”

“It depends on each moment and is something you have to analyse very clearly. If you do that and look at each game on its own, maybe it will be different.”

“It means they will have more points, clearly, but there are some very good teams in different positions in the table.”

“I don’t think I ever said we were playing the best out of everyone, maybe just at certain moments.”

“I do have a lot of respect for the other teams, but to say who is the best at one moment is not easy.”

“There are a lot of good teams in the Premier League.”

“Without putting them in any order, I’d say Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Arsenal are the best. This year we have shown we are improving and a better team than before.”

“We can still get better but we are in this position because we are winning a lot, played good football, scored a lot of goals and not conceded many.”

“Eighty points is good, 86 could be much better too, and we will try to get there and see what happens.”

The former Valencia boss believes his side are getting closer to lifting an elusive nineteenth title, but feels it will be difficult with the massive spending power at Alex Ferguson’s disposal.

“For me United have a bigger squad with top class players, but always they spend more than we can.”

“If they make mistakes they can use different players, but the level of the teams is more or less the same.”

“If we want to improve next year we have to keep playing at the same level in the league. At the end of the season consistency is the key.”

Benitez is already being linked with moves for players such as Gareth Barry, Diego Forlan, David Silva, Glen Johnson and Lorik Cana, but he believes he already has enough quality to land silverware.

“You can’t win the league the next year if you have been 20 points behind in this one.”

“Now, because we are closer, we will see what happens next time. They will improve so we have to.”

“At least we have shown our level and that we can be consistent, which is good for wanting to win trophies and titles.”

Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard’s goals will once again be vital if they are to challenge next season, but Benitez wants his whole side to be more clinical in front of goal.

“We’ve beaten the top sides this season when we’ve lost in the past and maybe drawn to the smaller clubs.”

“There are times when we have drawn at home for example when we’ve had 20-25 goal attempts.”

“You look at the home game against Stoke. We had a goal disallowed in the first minute and that could make a massive difference. So how can you win it? If you have all those attempts, then you have to take your chances.”

“We didn’t in those games, but then we did in some others.”
