According to reports in the press, Xabi Alonso is the key factor in Rafael Benitez’s Summer transfer ideas.

Several papers have claimed that the Spaniard has not lost the interest of Juventus and Arsenal, but he is now also seriously intriguing Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona as well.

Benitez does not wish to part with the midfielder – who came very close to moving on last Summer – but he has been told that he’ll need to sell before he can start buying.

And with Gareth Barry at the top of his wanted list, Alonso could be sacrificed so that a move for the Villa man can be tied up – although it may only take £8m to secure his signature.

Benitez recently admitted that his job is a tough one with Chelsea and Manchester United having superior spending power.

Benitez could be set to part with around ten players this Summer and as well as Alonso, Ryan Babel, Albert Riera, Jermaine Pennant, Charles Itandje and Andrea Dossena are among the names linked with moves out of Anfield.

David Silva tops the Spaniard’s list of attacking targets, but with a hefty pricetag on his shoulders Wigan’s Antonio Valencia could be a more realistic option.

This would be the greatest error of Rafa if Alonso is sold

I really don’t want to see Alonso sold this Summer, he’s been excellent this season.

He’s also a lot better than Gary Barry!!
