Daniel Agger is reported to have agreed fresh terms on a new deal at Anfield this week.

A queue of top European clubs were lining up to make a move for the Danish defender, with AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid rumoured to be preparing bids.

But in the last fortnight talks between Liverpool and Agger’s agent, Per Steffensen, have progressed considerably and a deal is said to have been struck between the parties.

Steffensen travelled to Merseyside last week to step up negotiations which were held shortly after the 4-4 draw with Arsenal.

Benitez would not confirm speculation but did admit things are going well and that a deal looks close.

“The conversations have gone really well and we are very close,” he said.

“Maybe in a few hours we will have a solution.”

Benitez is currently attempting to conclude a long term deal with Agger, who is set to join Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt in committing his future to the club.

Verbal agreements have also been struck with youngsters Nabil El Zhar, Krisztian Nemeth, Peter Gulacsi and Nathan Ecclestone.
