Sami Hyypia is set to reject the chance to join Liverpool’s coaching staff so that he can continue with his playing career.

The giant Finn has been discussing terms on a new one-year deal at Anfield, which would include an option to move into Rafael Benitez’s backroom team.

But Hyypia is set to reject this offer in order to continue playing past his approaching 36th birthday. The defender feels he has plenty to offer at this level still and fears his chances will be reduced at Anfield next season.

Benitez managed to persuade him to reject January moves to Newcastle, Fulham and Stoke – but may struggle to do so this Summer.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson will offer Hyypia a move to Craven Cottage again in the summer when his deal expires, which could see Brede Hangeland head the other way as Benitez looks for a replacement.
