Barcelona and Real Madrid are reported to have given up the chase of Cesc Fabregas and have instead turned their attention to his international team-mate Xabi Alonso.
The Spanish midfielder almost left Anfield last Summer with Juventus and Arsenal both looking to sign him. Neither move materialised and he has since rekindled his form in a Red shirt.
Real Madrid are looking forward to a Summer Presidential election and Alonso’s name has been mentioned by various candidates, while their big rivals are also looking at the playmaker.
Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola was looking to sign Fabregas, but has turned his attention to Alonso after being rebuffed in a move for the diminutive Arsenal midfielder.
The growing line of clubs looking to sign Alonso has caused Rafael Benitez to issue a hands off warning this week.
“Xabi is having a good season and is a key player. He’s a player we want to keep.” Benitez said.
