Rafael Benitez believes he finally has the power and control at Anfield to make Liverpool a long-term success, after signing a new five year deal.

Benitez has long felt constrained by a limited budget compared to Chelsea and Manchester United, and also by the slow work of Rick Parry – who is now set to leave the club.

The club’s American owners have promised to back Benitez to the tune of £40m in this Summer’s transfer market – and also insisted any new investors would stick to that agreement.

But more importantly than that, Benitez has been granted control over his budget and also the negotiations. He will want to identify his targets and move for them quicker than Parry has allowed him to in the past.

Benitez is already looking forward to pushing on and winning more trophies with the club.

“Now we must look ahead, not back,” he said. “We have a task ahead and that is to improve in all departments – the squad, the mentality – everything that we possibly can.”

“We want to be successful and to bring trophies to this club for the fans, and to do that we have to try to do things perfectly from now on.”

Benitez now believes that he has the control necessary to move for higher quality players in the transfer market – and secure them cheaply and efficiently.

Examples such as Nemanja Vidic, Gabriel Milito, Daniel Alves, Simao Sabrosa and Ricardo Quaresma could have been signed had the club acted immediately on his advice.

“Because of the uncertainty it was a difficult time, the conversations went on for a long time and because of that I was a bit worried,” he said.

“But I never thought of leaving and in the end it has all been sorted out thanks to the hard work of everyone involved.”

“From the very beginning everyone knew that I wanted to stay here.”

“But it took a bit longer for everything to be concluded because there were certain issues that we needed to be clarified. We have done that now and I am satisfied I have the backing I need to take this club forward. That is all I ever wanted, because this is a great club that needs to be challenging for honours and we have the chance to do that.”

Benitez has successfully worn down resistance from Hicks and Gillett, and has gained more control over transfer policy, spending and the youth setup at Anfield – and also the removal of Parry.

Parry is set to leave Anfield this Summer, and Hicks said: “Rafa was never wanting control of the transfer policy, he just wanted to make sure we had better decision-making capability and that we moved quicker than we had in the past.”

Hicks also claims he and Gillett have reached a new professional understanding and what to push Liverpool on to success in the future.
