Rafael Benitez has expressed his disappointment at going out of the FA Cup at the hands of local rivals Everton, especially in the fashion in which the game was decided.

“I am really disappointed to have gone out of the FA Cup. To play for a long time with 10 players and then to concede a goal right at the end from a deflection, we have to be disappointed.” said the Spaniard.

“The turning point of the game was the sending-off but I prefer not to say anything about that.”

“You can lose players which is part of the game but when you play with 10 players and they are working as hard as they did tonight it was really bad luck at the end.”

The Liverpool manager tried to look to the positives, however, and appears determined to remain focussed on trying to bring one of the bigger two trophies back to Anfield.

“We now have to concentrate on the Premier League and the Champions League so there is still a lot to play for.

“They are two massive competitions and we are in a very good position.”

Benitez defended his decision to substitute Fernando Torres in injury-time at Goodison Park, which reduced the chances of a Reds goal further following Lucas’s dismissal.

“Torres was really tired and that’s why I took him off.”

“He needs to keep playing games and keep training because his match fitness is not the best but that will come.”
