Reports today claim that the proposed deal that would see Tom Hicks and George Gillett sell the club to a Kuwaiti consortium is now dead.

Kuwaiti billionaire Nasser Al-Kharafi, chairman of the Kharafi Group, was linked in several newspapers with a £500m takeover of the club.

Rafael Benitez refused to confirm or deny the reports on Friday – “I was really surprised with the news” – and reports claimed that he didn’t even know of the discussions.

Jassem Al-Kharafi, elder brother Nasser, has denied that the Kharafi Group is looking to buy the club. He said: “We have not conducted any negotiations. The group has no plans to buy any sports club.”

The news will come as a disappointment to Reds who hoped the end of Hicks and Gillett was in sight.
