After signing Lassana Diarra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in this January transfer window, Real Madrid have had their appeal to allow the two to be added to their UEFA Champions League squad rejected.

Both players had previously appeared in this season’s UEFA Cup for Portsmouth and Ajax respectively, and rules state that only one could be added to a UCL squad for the knockout phase of competition.

A UEFA statement read: “UEFA’s appeals body upheld the decision taken by the control and disciplinary body, in accordance with article 17.18 of the competition regulations. They rejected an appeal by Real Madrid CF in relation to the Spanish club’s request to be able to register two players who have already competed in UEFA competition this season, as part of their A-list squad for the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League.”

Madrid are now expected to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after claiming they had a “different interpretation” of the rule.
