According to reports, Rafael Benitez’s contract talks have stalled over his demands to have total control over the club’s transfer policy.

The Daily Mail claim: ‘Perturbed at what he perceived as a lack of support over his £15million pursuit of Aston Villa’s England midfielder Gareth Barry last summer, Benitez wants to spend any funds exactly as he sees fit. It has not gone down well with Hicks and Gillett, who feel he should not be trying to dictate terms.’

The Guardian say: ‘At present Benítez recommends who is bought and sold to Hicks and Gillett plus the Liverpool chief executive, Rick Parry, who then decide the player’s value, what the club can afford – in relation to purchases – and divide the transfer budget accordingly. In future, however, the Liverpool manager wants to dispense with the existing chain of command and operate on his own terms, setting the valuation on players providing the transfer budget allows.’

Benitez has just short of 18 months remaining on his present deal and with Real Madrid always interested, this news will disappoint Reds everywhere.
