The Daily Mirror are reporting that Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has tabled a bid for castaway Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant.

The Englishman has been left out in the cold at Anfield this season after rejecting moves to Stoke and Blackburn in the Summer and could be tempted to end his exile by moving to Celtic Park.

Pennant could leave for free next Summer unless he makes 15 Premiership appearances in the remainder of this season which would trigger an extension to his deal. It is unlikely that he will make those outings given the presence of Dirk Kuyt, Yossi Benayoun, Ryan Babel and Nabil El Zhar in Benitez’s squad.

Strachan sees the winger as a ready made replacement for Aidan McGeady, whom he had a bitter falling out with last week. The Irishman looks set to move to the Premiership in January.
