Liverpool have again been linked with Spaniard Albert Riera, but after a Summer of speculation and negotiation they may not be able to secure the winger’s signature, according to FootyLatest.com.

They claim the rumours are resurfacing merely because the Gareth Barry deal looks dead in the water.

Footylatest.com claim that he will not be the replacement target for Barry as Riera admitted previously that if his club came to an agreement with Liverpool, he would be delighted to move to Anfield, but that he will not be able to leave for less than his contract buy-out fee, as stated by Espanyol President Daniel Sanchez Llibre.

“He already knows what the price is if he wants to leave,” Llibre said in Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.

“Albert is clear on where he stands and what needs to be paid for him for us to allow him to leave.”

“At the moment we haven’t received received any offer and if nothing comes, whether he likes it or not, he’ll have to stay because he is an Espanyol player.”

FootyLatest.com added: “That price is set at €24million Euros, which is about 20 million Pounds. Why would Benitez be willing to pay £20m for Riera when he can’t pay £18m for Barry? No chance at all.”

“Secondly, Riera spoke out just ten days ago, and promised the Espanyol fans that he will be playing his heart out for them this season. “This club has given me a lot and I am very grateful.” he said.” As long as I’m in the Espanyol shirt, I will defend their colours and give everything to the club.” is also quoted from the article.

All eyes will be on the transfer situation until the window slams shut at midnight on September 1st. And what is for sure is that Rafa Benitez will be hoping to strengthen the left-side of his midfield before then if these rumours are to be believed.
