Albert Riera
RCD Espanyol
Spain
15th April 1982 (26 years old)

The Spanish winger has constantly been linked with a move to Anfield this Summer and again is the subject of heated speculation. Rafael Benitez will know plenty about the winger and will have specific ideas for him if he manages to secure his signature in this transfer window. Press reports stated that a £9.5m + Sebastian Leto bid was rejected for his services.

Many British based fans will remember him most for his brief loan spell at Manchester City. The Eastlands club signed him on loan from Espanyol in January 2006 and he made his debut in a 3-1 derby victory over rivals Manchester United. City were unable to agree a fee with Espanyol for him, however, and he returned to Spain for the 2006-7 season.

That season was probably the highlight of Riera’s career. He was an integral part of the Espanyol side’s run to the UEFA Cup final, where they didn’t lose a single game en route. They lost to Sevilla on penalties in that final after Riera had scored their goal in normal time. Riera was one of the best players on the field that night and was unlucky not to score with an excellent free-kick.

Riera won his first international cap for Spain against Denmark on 13th October 2007. He scored a goal in a 3-1 victory in the Euro 2008 qualifier.
