Returning Assistant Manager Sammy Lee has told the official site that he is happy with the start made by the side but expects an improvement sooner rather than later.

“It’s always nice to get off the season underway with a win,” he said.

“I think we are fully aware of the fact we didn’t play to our best but the important thing is to get off to a good start with three points away from home.

“Winning isn’t all that matters but it’s important that you start the season well and finish it well. We need to improve in all areas and that’s what we are about anyway; making sure we improve on a daily basis.

“We know we aren’t firing on all cylinders just yet but it was just nice to get off to a win, particularly away from home.

“We all want to hit the ground running and you can do no better than to get off to a win. But with Liverpool being Liverpool we are perfectionists. We are never happy whether it’s 1-0, 3-0, 4-0 and we’ll certainly be looking to improve in the coming days.”

“When you go away from home the first game of the season, the main thing is to get the result,” he said.

Lee has been pleased with the progress of new boys Andrea Dossena and Robbie Keane, but he feels, like the team, that they can both improve and have a bigger impact.

“New players have come in with the likes of Dossena, and it’s a totally new type of football and he’s got a game under his belt and it’ll be nice to take that into the coming games.

“This a very tough league. For someone like Dossena to come in and to get that under his belt is ideal. It’s the same with Robbie, the more games he plays with Fernando and get an understanding the better it will be for everybody.”

Rafa’s assistant was also full of praise for Spaniard Fernando Torres, but believes that he isn’t the only player capable of matchwinning moments of inspiration.

“It was a great strike but that’s what he’s all about isn’t it,” he said.

“I don’t like to single out individuals. We are about team and team ethic here. We’ve got a number of great players here and each of them is a joy to work with. He’s one of many good professionals we have.

“To win things you need quality players who can change a game at any given moment and we’ve got a number of people who can do that.”
