Rafa turns to Spanish winger by lfctalk

The Echo are reporting that Rafael Benitez is set to make another move for Spanish winger Albert Riera.

The Espanyol attacker has previously indicated his willingness to join the club or remain in Barcelona. After having an opening bid rejected earlier this Summer, Benitez has shifted his attention to other targets, but as none of those have materialised he is set to return with an improved offer for the former Manchester City loanee.

After two disappointing games this season, Benitez may be aware that he needs more firepower and supply for his team and could see Riera as the solution to the attacking problems we’ve witnessed so far. Benayoun and Kuyt have not impressed on the flanks and have made the team too narrow in approach, something Riera would do a lot to resolve. Whether he has the quality to succeed at this level remains to be seen, but he could be worth a punt with the lack of genuine wide talent available.

I would be happy to see Riera arrive.

I don’t think he’s a top-class winger, but our lack of width so far this season means that someone of his quality would do for this season. That said, he was excellent in the Espanyol v Sevilla UEFA Cup Final in 2007. Scored a cracking goal and hit a nice free-kick, so he’s obviously capable.

But, as I say, I think we’re so in need of some quality from the wide areas that he’s well worth a punt.
