Brazilian left-back Fabio Aurelio has insisted that the club challenge for the Premiership title this season. The 28 year old, now in his third season at the club, is keen to earn a winner’s medal sooner rather than later.

“Each season the expectation is very big,” he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

“I think that we can show to the supporters that this could be their year so we have to keep it going now.”

Aurlio suffered a torn abductor muscle against Chelsea in last season’s Champions League semi-final first-leg at Anfield, but is now back to fitness and looking for a place in the team again.

“Unfortunately the injuries make you miss some games.

“I hope now this is the last one and I can have a great season.”

Aurelio now faces competition for his spot in the team from £8m Italian Andrea Dossena. After John Arne Riise was sold to Roma in the Summer, the former Valencia man may have been hoping only Emiliano Insua would be competing for the left-back berth, but he welcomes the latest challenger for the spot.

“He is a good signing and will be a good player for us and being honest I wish him all the best and for me and for Liverpool, which is the most important thing.”
