The Mirror is reporting that Rafael Benitez could be set to offer a reduced fee for Gareth Barry after the midfielder was cup-tied by featuring, and scoring, in Aston Villa’s UEFA Cup win last night.

Should he now sign for the club, he would not be available for the Champions League until after the Group Stage in the Spring of 2009. But it could be a solution that suits all parties, to a degree.

Should Benitez secure the England midfielder for a reduced fee, the Anfield board would be happy to sanction the move as the only stumbling block for them was the £18m asking price. It would also allow Barry the chance to complete his “dream move” and end the saga for all concerned.
