Ex-Reds defender, Assistant Manager and Caretaker Manager Phil Thompson has backed Rafael Benitez to end the 18 year wait for a nineteenth title at Anfield.

“I am looking forward to the season because I think Rafa Benitez has put together his best squad yet,” he told the official website.

“I think we may do something this year. A realistic aim is to win the league title – I mean that.” he added.

Now a Sky Sports News pundit, Thommo is used to the mocking words of ex-United, Chelsea and Arsenal players also plying their trade on Soccer Saturday.

The Anfield legend is looking forward to being able to do just the same to his rivals, but feels that Anfield needs to be a fortress once again for that to happen.

“People say we need to beat the top teams and yes, we do. The game against Manchester United on September 13 is our first chance to set down a marker in that respect. But when you talk about the top sides, there’s only three.

“We drew against too many of the easier teams last season, particularly at home, so I think the most important thing is that Anfield becomes a fortress again. There wasn’t too much difference between the top sides last season so if we do that then yes, we can win the league.”

During his Summer break in Tenerife, one Summer signing caught his eye.

“I was flagging Robbie Keane up half way through last season after I found out he was a Liverpool fan and all his family were Reds,” he added.

“I thought that, with him being such a good player as well, he’d be a fantastic asset to the team.

“He’s full of enthusiasm, has great skill, scores goals, works hard and, when the going gets tough, he’s going to roll his sleeves up and want it that bit more.

“It’s good that we’ve got that Irish link back as well, because if you look back at the success we’ve had, Scottish and Irish players have always played a big part.”

Hopefully Thommo will be proven right and Rafa’s men will mount a genuine title challenge.
