Carragher: “Tie is not over” by lfctalk

Last night’s 0-0 draw was one of the most one-sided encounters you are likely to see in Europe this season, but the team applying the pressure is the statistic that will surprise fans the most.

Standard Liege’s performance was far beyond even their own expectations and deserved at least a goal lead before the second leg at Anfield in a fortnight. The Belgian champions played with the confidence and purpose that was sorely lacking from their vastly more experienced opponents.

Liverpool will be relieved to have come away with the score remaining at 0-0 after a match that saw several gilt-edged chances missed by their gallant hosts.

And after a torrid evening’s work in Belgium, vice-captain Jamie Carragher has been quick to point out that the hard work isn’t done.

“It’s definitely not over,” Carragher told the Liverpool Echo.

“We know it’ll be another tough game next time and it’s very important that we don’t let them get an away goal when they come to Anfield.”

Liverpool have found this qualifying round tricky in the past and have lost the home leg 1-0 on two occasions under Rafael Benitez.

A repeat of that scoreline would see the 2005 European Champions crash out of the competition before it’s even reached the group stages. And although the balance of the game last night was in the Belgian’s favour, Carragher has been quick to point out that qualification has eventually been achieved in the past.

“We would certainly take it if we can get through now and go on to do what we’ve done in the Champions League in the past,” added Carragher.

“Over the years we’ve always seemed to find these kind of games difficult but gone on to do well and hopefully this time it will be the same.

“It’s never a bad result in Europe to come away and get a clean sheet and now we’ve done that we have to go on and do the business at Anfield.”

All eyes will be on Anfield on August 27th for the return leg.
