Hamburg linked with Reds duo by lfctalk

New Hamburg manager Martin Jol has admitted that is on the lookout for at least one more signing before the start of the new Bundesliga season.

Reports in England last week claimed that the Dutchman was casting his eye longingly in Dirk Kuyt’s direction, and given his previous interest when in charge at Spurs it came as no surprise. However, sources close to Hamburg have claimed that it is not the Dutch forward that Jol is after – it’s Yossi Benayoun and Jermaine Pennant.

Jol has been put off making an offer for Kuyt after being quoted a fee of £16m by Liverpool. But given Liverpool’s need for cash to complete the signing of Gareth Barry, the midfield duo of Benayoun and Pennant could be made available if the right bid is made for either. And if Benitez wants to seal the long-protracted deal for the Villa captain, he will need to secure the funds through player sales.

Jol knows that he needs new faces and has been quoted as saying: “We are working on some new signings and hopefully it will all work out,” he said.

“I would be really delighted to welcome a new player to the side.”

Hamburg are keeping their cards close to their chests but at least one bid for a Liverpool player is expected before the end of the week.
