Tom Hicks and George Gillett have taken the option of extending the deadline on the £350m they owe the Royal Bank of Scotland. Under the terms of the loan they could choose between refinancing the debt, paying back the full amount this month or extending the deadline for six more months. They took the latter option.

The development means the loan will now not mature until July 24, but it is understood that no further extensions will become available come that time.

Alex Ferguson has claimed that Liverpool will drop points in the title run-in and also stated that his side will punish them for doing so.

“There’s no doubt that in the second half of the season they will get nervous,” Ferguson declared.

“With the experience we’ve got, having won a couple of titles in the past couple of years especially, it helps you. There’s no doubt about that.”

“They’re going into the unknown, and if you make mistakes, then you get punished.”

The Manchester United manager is playing his usual mind games and obviously is taking Liverpool’s title challenge more and more seriously.

Rio Ferdinand was recently taking a leaf out of his manager’s book by writing off Arsenal – right before Liverpool were due to visit The Emirates. Which is no conincidence.

Rafael Benitez has moved to quash rumours that Italian left-back Andrea Dossena could be sold back to a Serie A club.

The Italy international has so far failed to make much of a positive impact at Liverpool and rumours were abound that he would be going back to Italy this month with the likes of AC Milan, Juventus and Roma linked with moves for him.

“I am not considering selling Dossena,” Benitez said in the Daily Star.

“I think it is important to keep the squad together.”
