Rafa boosted in Johnson chase

Rafael Benitez’s pursuit of Glenn Johnson has received a boost after Portsmouth executive Peter Storrie admitted that they would listen to offers for any of their squad.

“As with any of our players, obviously if an exceptional offer came in, such as the £20m for Lassana Diarra, we would consider it.” said Storrie.

Benitez is rumoured to be chasing the right-back after the failure of Summer signing Philipp Degen. The Swiss international has been blighted by injury since his arrival and has barely featured, making only two Carling Cup appearances. Alvaro Arbeloa has had little competition for his place and Johnson’s arrival would put him under serious pressure.

Hull City manager Phil Brown has admitted that he is interested in winger Jermaine Pennant. The former Arsenal player has surprisingly attracted the interest of Real Madrid, but looks set to stay in the Premiership with these developments.

Brown said: “I would be very interested in Jermaine Pennant if he was available at the right price. We will be making enquiries.”

“We have got a number of irons in the fire, but just because the transfer window opens, doesn’t mean to say everyone jumps into business straight away.”

“A lot of these windows start with the big boys, and once they start to do their dealings everyone else follows suit. We have got certain targets earmarked.”
